Vegan cheese fondue is great for gatherings or just a nice treat for two. Keep it warm in any ordinary fondue pot or just reheat occasionally in the microwave. It keeps well, too, in an air-tight container in the fridge. We reheated our most recent batch a few times over a couple of days and it stayed just as yummy as freshly made.

Fondue facts: The word “fondue” comes from the French word, fondre, which means, “to melt.” The French also say, “La fondue crée la bonne humeur,” which means, “Fondue creates a good mood.”

All the other vegan cheese fondue recipes I found included cashews or nuts of some kind. I wanted something a little lighter. Some people avoid nuts for lots of different reasons as well so I used starchy things to make the bulk of the cheese.Oats and potatoes work great for this recipe.

… and tapioca flour and corn starch help make it even more stretchy.Of course, there’s nutritional yeast for that cheesy nutty flavor. Lemon juice for tartness. And miso paste or bouillon paste for a touch of umami.A little pinch of nutmeg makes it perfect.

Which Wine is Perfect for Vegan Cheese Fondue?

A dry, white wine is usually what is used for traditional cheese fondue. Any white wine that’s dry and high in acid will work. Actually, to be honest, I think any wine would work for the vegan version of fondue. I think a merlot would be nice here, too. Use what you have. I used a Sauvignon Blanc for this. If you want to avoid alcohol, just use an equivalent amount of water. It’s not going to make that huge of a difference and will still be delicious.

Check Barnivore to Ensure Your Wine is Vegan

Many wines are vegan but some use various animal products for clarifying the wine during the process. Usually, no animal products remain in the finished wine. However, you can find wines that use no animal products at all. Barnivore is a site that ranks wines, beers, and liquors.

Add a Bit of Miso Paste

Or don’t. This is the only ingredient I didn’t have readily on hand and that was harder to find locally than I anticipated. It does add a nice bit of flavor, but if you don’t have it don’t worry about it. Seriously. It’s delicious either way. Substitute a tablespoon of vegan bouillion paste (I love Better Than Bouillion). If you don’t have either, just add a tad bit more salt. It’s food, not rocket surgery.

Best Plant Milk To Use

Plant-based milks are deliciously awesome and delightfully varied. They come sweetened or sweetened with vanilla added as well as unsweetened and unflavored. This recipe absolutely needs a milk that is unflavored and unsweetened. I’m a big fan of the So Delicious brand unsweetened coconut milk. It’s very mild and almost flavorless but also nice and creamy. We get ours at Costco for $10 for a 6 pack. It’s a little more pricey than the soy or almond milk, but it’s my favorite by far. And only 40 calories.

Oil or No Oil

That is the question. It’s up to you. We’re cutting oil out almost entirely from our diet and really haven’t noticed a difference in flavor with most recipes. This recipe lists oil as being optional. Add a few tablespoons of olive or avocado oil if you like. It does add just a bit of nice mouthfeel. However … This is also totally delicious without it.

Serving Vegan Cheese Fondue

A traditional fondue pot has a Sterno burner underneath to keep the fondue hot and gooey. If you don’t have one (I don’t) there are several ways to serve this that are just as good. Here are a few options.

  • Traditional Fondue Pot with Sterno Burner
  • Straight From The Saucepan (Don’t Judge)
  • Any Microwaveable Bowl or Crock
  • Small Crock Pot or Slow Cooker
  • Electric Heat Pad
  • Reheat Occasionally in Microwave (My Favorite)
